POTS media converter allows users to connect central office voice-level
signals to remote devices using standard telephone signaling. Many traditional
devices are still installed, using these traditional networks to provide high quality
voice services, and media converters provide connection flexibility, which can
extend the service life of these devices. In this article, we will introduce what
is POTS, what is E1 and why do we need POTS over E1 Converter.
What is POTS?
POTS stands for Plain Old Telephone Service, or Plain Ordinary
Telephone System, and is a retronym for voice-grade telephone service. This
technology was introduced as the antonym of voice-grade telephony. To transmit
audio signals, POTS uses copper cables to convert audio signals into analog
signals.
What is E1?
E1 is a digital communication link that can transmit voice, data and video
signals. E1 is used in Europe and provides a 2.048Mbps communications link. E1
frame is composed of 32 channels, and each channel is transmitted at 64 Kbps. Among
these 32 channels, 30 channels are used to carry voice, and the remaining two channels
are used for signaling and synchronization. E1 uses time division multiplexing
to separate data and allocate channels for transmission.
What is E1 Converter?
E1 converter, or E1 Ethernet converter, the function of it is
Ethernet over E1 transmission. E1 converter provides high-speed LAN-to-WAN
connectivity. E1 converter can support E1 port with 75ohm or 120ohm port. The
device can support Console management, easily manage the device and monitor its
working status.

Why Do We Need POTS over E1 Converter?
Although Internet-based telecommunications technologies, such as Voice
over IP (VoIP), are widely used today, some companies still use POTS for
internal confidential communication. Due to the long-distance transmission
capability and higher reliability, this technology is being reused for
commercial communications.
Due to the physical infrastructure, POTS will always be with us. All copper wires on poles and thousands of miles of copper wires buried underground have been reused to support VoIP technology and high-speed bandwidth. The combined use of copper wires for POTS and fiber optic cabling is an integral part of our modern communications infrastructure.
