What is OTDR

Full form of OTDR is Optical Time Domain Reflectometer. OTDR is a testing device used in fiber optic networks to measure the types of optical fibers . It sends a series of optical pulse into the fiber and measures the the reflected signals to determine fiber length, connection loss, and the location of faults or splices. OTDR is an important tool for fiber optic installation and maintenance.

Why do we need OTDR?

OTDR play a critical role in fiber optic communication systems for several reasons. Such as,

Fiber link characterization

OTDR provide detailed insights into fiber optic links, helping network engineers understand the condition and quality of the fibers. They measure the signal loss over distance, splice loss and connector losses, ensuring the link meets required specifications.

Fault Detection

OTDR can detect issues such as fiber breaks, bends, splices or poor connectors by pinpointing the exact location. This helps technicians quickly locate and repair faults, reducing downtime.

Splice and connector loss measurements

Splicing fibers or connecting fibers introduces some levels of loss. OTDR help measure these losses to ensure they are within acceptable limits. It ensures that fiber joints do not degrede network performance.

Fiber Maintenance and Upgrades

OTDR helps monitor fiber degradation over time, allowing proactive maintenance before serious failures occur. When upgrading a fiber network, OTDR verify that the new fiber segments integrate correctly with existing infrastructure.

Fiber Documentation and certification

OTDR traces provide a permanent record of fiber quality and performance. These traces are useful for verifying compliance with industry standards and for future troubleshooting.

How to Select OTDR?

Selecting the right OTDR depends on several factors, including the type of fiber network, required measurement accuracy, budget and ease of use. Here are some key factors:

Do you need to measure multi-mode or single mode fiber cable?

Multi-mode Fiber cable OTDR

If you want to test multi-mode fiber cable, you can choose the OTDR with multi-mode wavelength 1300nm/850nm. Two models are suggested:

BD4000-M1, Smart OTDR,Dynamic Range:850nm/1300nm, 26/28, 7inch touched screen, smart management, integrated Optical power meter/Laser Soure/VFL. The OTDR with higher precision and quality, it is suitable for telcom carrier operation.

Single-mode Fiber cable

If you need to single mode fiber cable, the OTDR with single mode wavelength 1310/1550nm is suitable for you. The type of OTDR is general. Most of clients need such OTDR. For single mode, there are different model for different distance.

1. If customers want to measure single-mode optical fiber within 40-60 kilometers, BD400D mini OTDR is suitable for you. It has high performance and OTDR cost. Wavelength 1310/1550nm, measurement range 40~60KM, dynamic range 24/26dB.

It also have Event maps function, event map is easily to read the test result, especial for the non-professional user. The OTDR also integrate Light source (1310/1550nm) , Optical power meter, Visual fault locator, cable sequence proof reading functions.

2. If customers want to measure single-mode optical fiber over 60 km, you can choose our BD6000 series OTDR, the BD6000-2108. Wavelength 1310/1550nm, measurement range up to 100KM, dynamic range 32/30dB.

If you want to test longer distance, you can choose the OTDR with higher dynamic range, for example, BD6000-2101 Dynamic Range:1310nm/1550nm 38/36dB,

BD6000-2103, Dynamic Range:1310nm/1550nm 45/42dB, the model can test about 180~260KM distance.

Can we use the OTDR to test both multi-mode and single mode fiber cable? BD6000-4001 can support single mode and multi-mode wavelength. Smart OTDR,Dynamic Range:850nm/1300nm/1310nm/1550nm 37/35/26/34, 7inch touched screen, smart management, integrated OPM/LS/VFL

Overall

An OTDR is an essential tool for fiber optic network installation, maintenance and troubleshooting. It helps detect faults , measure losses and ensure fiber link performance. Choosing the right OTDR depends on factors such as Fiber type, Dynamic range, dead zones, pulse width and ease of use. Investing in the right OTDR ensures Network reliability, reduces downtime and improves operational efficiency.
